UGC Creator Guide: Find, Brief and Pay Creators

Key takeaways

  • 1A UGC creator makes customer-style content for brands to run on their own channels and ads. You pay for the content, not the creator's audience.
  • 2Expert creators are the strongest version: CeraVe's skin-expert TikToks, repurposed as ads, did 13M views with an 84 per cent brand recall uplift.
  • 3Find creators among your own customers first, then through GoAffPro affiliates, TikTok Creator Marketplace, niche hashtags and Modash.
  • 4Put usage rights in writing. In influencer deals, usage typically costs about 30 per cent of the posting fee per month of use, and UGC pricing should reflect that you are not buying reach.
  • 5Raw beats polished. The least salesy content drives the most sales, which is exactly why customer-style videos outperform brand-polished ones.

A UGC creator makes content that looks like it came from a happy customer, and smart brands are quietly building their ad accounts on it. I built Hero Packaging's marketing on raw, customer-style content and I teach founders to do the same. This guide explains what a UGC creator actually does, how UGC differs from influencer marketing, where to find creators, what goes in a brief, and the campaign numbers that made me a believer.

What is a UGC creator?

UGC stands for user-generated content. A UGC creator is someone who makes that customer-style content deliberately, usually for a fee, so brands can use it on their own channels and in their ads. The video looks like a real person showing off a product they love, because it is a real person. Just one who was briefed.

The key difference from influencer marketing sits in what you are paying for. With an influencer, you pay for their audience. With a UGC creator, you pay for the content itself. Many UGC creators never post the video to their own account at all. They hand you the file and you distribute it wherever it works hardest.

What is UGC content and why does it work?

UGC content is anything that shows the customer experience rather than the brand's polished pitch. Unboxings, honest reviews, demos, before and afters, a day in someone's life with the product sitting naturally in frame.

In my BE SEEN content framework, this lives under Experience. Cold audiences do not want a features list. They want to see what owning the product feels like, shown by someone like them. Brittney Saunders, who built Fayt The Label after years on YouTube, put it plainly when I interviewed her: raw and relatable has replaced aesthetic-polished, and the least salesy videos drive the most sales. That is UGC's home turf.

UGC content creator vs influencer: the economics

The difference shows up fastest in the invoice. When you want to reuse an influencer's content on your website or in your ads, usage rights typically cost about 30 per cent of their posting fee for every month you run it, on top of the post itself. Exclusivity costs more again, and agency-repped talent adds around 15 per cent plus taxes. UGC flips the model. The content is made for your channels from the start, so you are not paying for reach you never wanted.

The strongest version of this trade is the expert creator. CeraVe hired local skin experts on TikTok to explain how ceramides work, then repurposed two of those videos as in-feed ads. The results: 13 million video views, an 84 per cent uplift in brand recall, and a 29 per cent preference uplift among Australian women aged 18 to 34. Authority beats reach. If you gift product to experts, always ask for their ad usage rates, because expert content is the best raw material for paid ads you will ever get.

How to find UGC creators

  • Start with your own customers. The most convincing customer content comes from actual customers, and I always prefer working with people who already buy from the brand
  • Turn customers into affiliates with GoAffPro, a free Shopify app. Set a commission between 5 and 20 per cent, put a 'become an affiliate' link in your site menu, and creators earn on the sales they refer
  • Use TikTok Creator Marketplace and TikTok Creative Center. Both are free, and you can filter creators by country, industry and follower count, or run campaigns that take applications
  • Search niche hashtags for expert creators. For a scrubs brand that is #nursesoftiktok. Filter by most liked and most recent, then reach out
  • If you have budget, Modash is the biggest cross-platform creator database I have seen, searchable by country, engagement rate and topic

How to brief and pay a UGC creator

A vague brief gets you a vague video. Mine always cover:

  • The hook to test, or a request for three hook variations. The first three seconds decide about 80 per cent of a video's success
  • The one message the video must land. One, not five
  • Format and length, for example a 30-second talking-to-camera unboxing
  • Exactly where the content will run: organic, paid, your website
  • Usage rights and duration, in writing
  • Deliverables: the final edit plus raw files so you can recut for ads

On price, there is no fixed market rate for UGC, so anchor your offer to what the content replaces. Nano influencers with 1,000 to 10,000 followers charge anywhere from nothing to $800 for an Instagram post, and that price includes their audience. A content-only asset with no distribution attached should generally sit below a comparable post plus stacked usage rights. Whatever you agree, get the usage terms on paper. Fees for urgent turnaround are normal, and agency-repped creators cost more.

UGC examples worth copying

Coconut Bowls built UGC into a giveaway. They announced it with values-aligned health and sustainability influencers, ran a Vyper landing page wired to Klaviyo, and gave bonus entries for sharing and for uploading UGC. For around $1,000 in prize spend they generated 222,263 page views, 41,820 email subscribers and 37,703 new followers, with the landing page converting at 18 per cent. The entrants made the content for them.

LSKD shows the mid-funnel version. James Reu, who ran e-commerce there, described their conversion stack to me as education-first content on unique product benefits, heavy UGC and social proof, then a first-purchase discount as the closer. The customer content does the persuading before the discount does the converting.

And Beysis shows the style to imitate. Their daily unpolished behind-the-scenes clips, like pack-an-order-with-us videos, drove a 5,000 per cent increase in views within weeks. The lesson for any UGC brief: the moment it looks like an ad, it stops working like one.

How to run UGC in your ads

Once the content lands, put it to work. My standard opening test budget for any new paid ad on any platform is $30 a day, and I always test at least three creatives so I learn what the audience responds to instead of betting on one. This is where those raw files earn their place in the brief. You can recut the same UGC video into three different hooks and test them against each other for the cost of one shoot.

If the creator posts the video on their own account and it performs, ask about whitelisting. On TikTok these are Spark Ads, authorised with a code from the creator's settings, and they let you run their proven organic video as an ad from their handle, with your targeting and CTA buttons attached. Google did this with a video I made about their Duet AI tool and the ad delivered more than 239,000 views and 1,600 sign-ups from my account. Whitelisting is a separate permission with a separate fee, so raise it in the first conversation, not after the video takes off.

If you want to become a UGC creator

Plenty of people reading this are on the other side of the trade, and the same principles apply in reverse. Study hooks until they are second nature. Brands like Feastables, Mini Katana, See the Way I See and Strawberry Milk Mob are a free masterclass in the first three seconds. Practise on products you already own, and pitch brands you genuinely buy from, because founders like me prefer creators who are already customers. Build a daily B-roll habit so you always have footage. And put usage rights and duration in every agreement you sign. If a brand wants to run your video as an ad for months, that is worth more than a single organic post, and you should charge accordingly.

UGC is one piece of the influencer chapter of my playbook. The full system, including rate cards by follower tier and the seven influencer strategies I actually use, is in my book, Sell Anything Online. Start with your customers. The best creator you will ever brief probably bought from you last month.

What does a UGC creator do?

A UGC creator makes customer-style content, such as unboxings, reviews and demos, for brands to use on their own channels and in ads. Unlike an influencer, they are usually paid for the content itself rather than for posting to their own audience, and many never publish the video on their own account at all.

What is the difference between a UGC creator and an influencer?

You pay an influencer for access to their audience, and reusing their content costs extra, typically about 30 per cent of the posting fee per month of usage. You pay a UGC creator for the content itself, made for your channels from the start. Influencers rent you reach. UGC creators supply the raw material your own distribution runs on.

How much does UGC content cost?

There is no fixed market rate, so anchor your offer to what the content replaces. A nano influencer post runs from free to around $800 and includes their audience, so a content-only asset should generally cost less than a post with stacked usage rights. Price scales with usage: a video running as paid ads for months is worth more than one organic post. Always put usage terms in writing.

Does UGC work as paid ads?

It is some of the best ad material there is. CeraVe repurposed two skin-expert TikToks as in-feed ads and saw 13 million views, an 84 per cent brand recall uplift and a 29 per cent preference uplift among Australian women 18 to 34. Always request raw files in your brief so you can recut, and ask gifted experts for their ad usage rates up front.

How do brands find UGC creators?

Start with your own customers, who make the most convincing content. Then use GoAffPro to turn customers into commission-earning affiliates, browse TikTok Creator Marketplace and Creative Center for free, search niche hashtags like #nursesoftiktok for expert creators, and use Modash if you want the biggest paid database with engagement-rate filters.
