Instagram Stories Ads Examples That Actually Drove Sales

Key takeaways
- 1Stories is Instagram's action surface. In my own test, one story with a link and 4,000 views out-performed an email to 5,000 subscribers on clicks and sign-ups.
- 2Match the example to the audience temperature: direct product formats for cold viewers, founder and review formats for warm viewers, dynamic product formats for past customers.
- 3Every story ad gets one message and one destination. Send people to the exact product or sign-up page, never the homepage.
- 4Cold viewers do not know you, so skip founder stories and lead with the product: benefit call-outs, try-on clips with one feature overlay, press logos and hook-first video.
- 5Budgets follow my standard Meta rules: about $20 a day for warm retargeting, about $10 a day for past customers, and 10 per cent of average daily revenue as total spend.
The best Instagram Stories ads examples I can give you do not come from a swipe file of pretty screenshots. They come from nine years of running ads for Hero Packaging and auditing other founders' ad accounts, where I get to see which story creative actually produced orders rather than which one won a design award. This guide gives you the formats and copy lines that work at each funnel stage, the audience recipes to put behind them, and the settings to run them yourself.
First, why Stories deserves its own creative thinking. Stories is where Instagram users take action. Posts and reels are brilliant for reach, but asking someone to act from a caption sends them on a three-click obstacle course: tap the profile, find the bio link, pick the right option in the link tree. You lose most people at click one. Stories collapses that to a single tap on a full screen with one thing to look at.
I tested this directly when filling a free marketing masterclass: an email to 5,000 subscribers against a single Instagram story with an on-screen link that drew 4,000 views. The story won on clicks and on sign-ups. A story ad inherits all of that, as long as you respect how people watch. My organic stories lose 10 to 20 per cent of viewers with every frame, so I design every story ad as if the first frame is the only frame anyone will see, because for most viewers it is.
Research competitors' story ads before you make your own
Before designing anything, open Facebook Ads Library. It is free, and it shows you every live ad any brand is currently running across Meta's platforms, including Stories placements. Search your three biggest competitors and study what they keep spending on, because an ad that has been running for months is an ad that is paying for itself. Then look one category over: a skincare brand can steal structure from a supplements brand without copying anyone. You are not looking for creative to imitate. You are looking for the formats your market has already been trained to respond to.
Instagram Stories ads examples for cold audiences
Cold viewers have never heard of you, so the founder-story ad you love is invisible to them. Be direct about the product. These four formats are what I run to cold audiences, translated to the full-screen story canvas.
- The call-out: one clean product image with arrows or labels pointing to concrete benefits, like '12-hour wear' and 'comes in 18 colours'. Overlay one line of primary text, such as a starred customer review.
- The try-on: a short video of the product being worn or used, music underneath, a single feature overlay. One feature, never five.
- The 'as featured in': a lifestyle shot with press logos and one strong press quote. Borrowed authority works hard on people with no reason to trust you yet.
- The hook video: TikTok-style, opening on the problem. If you sell silk pillowcases, the first frame speaks to bad sleepers, and the product arrives after the hook has done its job.
Copy for cold story ads follows my normal Meta rules. Lead with a scroll-stopper: a five-star review, a question, a bold claim or a discount. Name the product plainly or use a little puffery, like 'the jeans that went viral'. Sweeteners close: 'same-day shipping', 'join 20,000 happy customers'.
Examples for warm audiences
Warm audiences have visited your site or engaged with your content, and this is where the founder finally earns the screen. My warm retargeting recipe targets website visitors from the last 180 days plus Instagram and Facebook engagers from the last 365, excluding anyone who added to cart.
- The founder piece to camera: why you started, what the brand stands for, delivered like a story you would post organically. Warm viewers click on humans.
- The packing-orders video: hands packing a real order while a voiceover talks through the product. Visible demand is its own persuasion.
- The review ad: one glowing customer review on screen with the product in use behind it. Text overlay: 'Over 1,000 people have given this five stars.'
- The curiosity flip: 'OK, so you have heard of us, but I bet you did not know this', leading into a product fact or a behind-the-scenes reveal.
Examples for past customers
The highest-ROAS campaign in every account I analyse retargets past purchasers: buyers from the last 180 days, excluding the last 30, because recent buyers do not need the nudge. In Stories, give the dynamic format the job. A hero video or image leads, and Meta personalises the products each viewer sees based on what they browsed and bought. Give this campaign at least 30 days before you judge it or touch it.
- The bestseller collage with 'We miss you!' as the headline.
- The new-drop video with 'You may not have seen our last drop.'
- The replenishment nudge for consumables: 'Running out of your favourite?'
- The seasonal gifting frame in the lead-up to Christmas, Mother's Day or whichever peak fits your product.
One more warm format worth naming: the first-purchase discount ad. When I interviewed James Reu, formerly head of ecommerce at LSKD, he described their mid-funnel conversion mix as education-first content on what makes the product different, heavy UGC and social proof, and then a first-purchase discount as the direct trigger. In Stories that translates to a UGC clip, one proof line on screen, and the offer as the final frame. The discount closes because everything before it did the convincing.
How to create Instagram Stories ads
Stories ads are created inside Meta Ads Manager, since Instagram and Facebook share the same ad platform. Set the campaign objective to sales or conversions, which I choose for almost every campaign because other objectives chase cheap eyeballs among people who will not buy. Define the audience at the ad set level using the recipes above, and make sure Stories is included in your placements. Build the creative vertical and full screen so it fills the phone rather than sitting as a letterboxed square.
For a cold campaign, the audience logic is the same one I teach for every Meta placement. Keep demographics broad and let the algorithm find your people. Search interests by typing your target market into the interests field, the way a kids' activewear brand would target parents and then intersect with an interest like exercise for kids to sharpen it. And always exclude past website visitors and social engagers from cold audiences, because there is no point paying cold-acquisition prices to reach people who already know you. Warm and past-customer campaigns flip that: they are built entirely from those custom audiences.
Budgets follow my standard rules. Overall, test 10 per cent of your average daily revenue as total daily Meta spend, so a store turning over $500 a day starts around $50 a day across everything. Within that, warm retargeting runs from about $20 a day and the past-customer campaign from about $10 a day, because those pools are smaller. Scale whatever works in 20 per cent increments and watch that sales keep pace with spend.
Rules I follow on every story ad
Everything organic stories taught me about driving traffic applies double when you are paying for the view. One clear message per story, because simplicity drives action. Send the tap to the exact destination, the specific product page or sign-up page, never the homepage or a generic collection. And one interactive element only: when I stack a link with a poll and a tag, engagement splits across them and the click I actually wanted loses.
“One story, one message, one link, one destination. Every element you add after that is stealing clicks from the thing you actually want people to do.”
Last habit: check your own account analytics for which story format earns the most views, whether that is video, photo or text on screen. On my accounts the gap between formats runs to thousands of views, and paid placements ride the same preferences. Design your story ads in the format your audience already watches most, and when a story ad performs, scale its budget in 20 per cent increments while you confirm sales keep pace.
Copy lines to adapt for your own story ads
- Cold, review-led: a five-star customer quote with the stars visible, then the product name and one benefit.
- Cold, question hook: 'Still waking up with creased skin?' or whichever problem your product removes.
- Cold, sweetener: 'Same-day shipping' or 'Join 20,000 happy customers' as the closing frame.
- Warm, familiarity: 'Have you wanted to try this?' or 'Over 1,000 people have given this five stars.'
- Warm, curiosity: 'OK, so you have heard of us, but I bet you did not know this.'
- Past customers: 'Running out of your favourite?', 'You may not have seen our last drop', 'We miss you!'
My book, How to Sell Anything Online, covers the full Meta ads system behind these examples plus a whole chapter on using Instagram to drive traffic. If you want the campaign-by-campaign settings, it is all in there.
Questions founders ask
What makes a good Instagram Stories ad?
One message, one destination, and a hook in the first second. Match the creative to how well the viewer knows you: direct product formats like benefit call-outs for cold audiences, founder and review content for warm audiences, and dynamic product ads with lines like 'We miss you!' for past customers.
How much do Instagram Stories ads cost to run?
You set the budget, so start from my rule of thumb: 10 per cent of average daily revenue as total Meta spend. Within that, I run warm retargeting from about $20 a day and past-customer campaigns from about $10 a day, then scale winners in 20 per cent increments while sales keep pace.
What size should Instagram Stories ads be?
Build them vertical and full screen at 9:16, which is 1080 by 1920 pixels, so the creative fills the phone. A square feed asset dropped into Stories sits letterboxed with dead space above and below it, and it looks like an ad nobody designed for the placement.
Where do I create Instagram Stories ads?
In Meta Ads Manager, because Instagram and Facebook run on the same ad platform. Set the objective to sales or conversions, build your audience at the ad set level, include Stories in your placements, and upload vertical creative built for the format.
